Talk Title: The changing scene in astronomy

Prof Ian Robson - The changing scene in astronomy

We are delighted to welcome Professor Ian Robson, former Director of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and former President of the Society for Popular Astronomy, as speaker. In a long career Ian has been a Professor at Edinburgh University as well as at the University of Central Lancashire and has had over 200 papers published on aspects of Astronomy. We are indeed lucky to have such an experienced and knowledgable speaker prepared to share his vision of what is currently happening in astronomy and where it is going.

Since the first use of the telescope in 1609 astronomers have made amazing discoveries about the Universe in which we live. Technological improvements have meant bigger and better telescopes and novel instruments spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum and beyond.
This talk gives an illustrated overview of this development and the discoveries that have led to our current knowledge of the Universe and concludes with the onset of ‘Big Data’ in modern astronomy and the changing scene facing astronomers today.
